In Celebration of Diana Ferrus (1953–2026)

In Celebration of Diana Ferrus (1953–2026)
We celebrate the life of Diana Ferrus with immense love, gratitude, and admiration — a life lived boldly, generously, and full of purpose.

Diana was a cherished South African poet, writer, and storyteller, and a literary figure whose work and mentorship shaped many lives. Writing from the age of 14, she spoke with clarity, courage, and compassion about identity, dignity, history, and healing. Her poetry — most famously I’ve Come to Take You Home — helped shift hearts and history, playing a vital role in the return of Saartjie (Sarah) Baartman to South African soil and reminding the world of the quiet power of art and truth.

She was not only a literary force but a true pillar of her communities in Cape Town, Worcester, and beyond. Diana gave freely of her time, wisdom, and warmth, nurturing generations of writers and creatives through workshops, conversations, and constant encouragement. In 2020, she was awarded the Freedom of the Town by her birthplace, Worcester — a symbolic honour akin to receiving the key to the city — recognising her lasting contribution to culture and community.

Diana had a remarkable way of opening her heart to others: to stories, to people, to possibility. At New Africa Books, we are deeply grateful to share in this spirit through The Boy Who Loved to Dance, a joyful and moving children’s story about courage, rhythm, and following one’s gift — values that Diana lived by so naturally.

From all of us at New Africa Books, we celebrate Diana’s life and legacy. Her voice, her stories, and her love continue to live on — uplifting, encouraging, and opening hearts, just as she always did.
