"The Mpumi series is inspired by my love for Johannesburg, some nostalgia from my childhood and Afro-textured hair. It’s really a love letter to the city which is often characterised as dangerous and grimy whereas it is also a space of fun, laughter and learning for children." ~ Lebohang Masango

The award ceremony was organised by the Nick Perren Foundation (NPF-Publishers' Association of South Africa (PASA) Lifetime Achievement Award committee. The award committee members include Brian Wafawarowa, Roy Mansell, Terry Morris, Jerome Davis and Mpuka Radinku. Roberta Perren, wife of the late Nick Perren, is the Chair of the Nick Perren Foundation.
In awarding the prize, the committee stated:
Without the likes of David and Marie Philip, SPROCAS (Ravan Press) and Skotaville in that chronological order, South African local trade publishing could just have been dismissed as apartheid publishing and would have been understandably described as going with the grain of apartheid. David and Marie Philip are credited with introducing alternative publishing, that was opposed to apartheid in South Africa 1971.
We invite the public to join us in celebrating an immeasurable publishing contribution made by Marie and the late David Philip.
New Africa Books' history starts with David Philip Publishers, which was founded in 1971 by Marie Philip and her late husband David.

My BIG Name is inspired by her own sister’s story of having her name changed by a school teacher, altering it from Isenguye to Izzy because she could not pronounce it. Sinxoto wants to emphasise the significance of pronouncing African names correctly because of the power they carry.
You can read the review of the book here in the Sowetan Live. Watch Amonge Elethu Sinxoto talk about her book on KAYA 959.
