There is bitter rivalry between the Hlubi village which lies below the Hill of Fools and the Thembu village just beyond the Xesi River. Fights break out regularly. Zuziwe, a Hlubi girl, is engaged to Ntabeni who is much older than she is. Ntabeni is a prosperous farmer and a keen churchman and has been proudly accepted by Zusiwe’s family as her future husband. But she falls in love with Bhuqa, one of the leading Thembu warriors. Her fiancé tries to win her back but in so doing provokes yet another fight between the two villages in which Zuziwe’s brother is killed, probably by her lover. When Zuziwe discovers she is going to bear Bhuqa’s child the tragedy develops with classical force and inevitability.
